Kathmandu, Nov 9:
The International Conference on Mountain People Adapting to Change started in
the capital city on Sunday jointly organized by Ministry for Science,
Technology and Environment and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain
Development (ICIMOD).
Inaugurating the
Conference, Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission, Dr Govinda Raj
Pokharel said the countries including Nepal in the region of the Himalayan
Range had high possibilities in using the abundance of natural resources
available despite which they remained in a state of poverty, and underscored
the urgency in using the natural resources.
He expressed
belief that in the Conference crucial scientific knowledge and experience would
be exchanged to stave off the negative impact of the Climate Change.
ICIMOD Director
Eklabya Sharma stressed on preserving the Himalayan Range and the natural and
cultural heritage found in the region citing lives of many were associated with
it.
Environment
Secretary Dr Krishnachandra Poudel said that the Conference would work as an
important forum for a country like Nepal with 80 per cent of hilly and
mountainous area to make its voice heard in the international community.
ICIMOD Executive
Director David Molden said that the global warming had affected the Himalayan
region and the habitat of the people living in the area.
The Conference
is being held to highlight the issue of the mountainous regions and the impact
of global warming in the Himalayan region on the eve of the 20th
conference of the countries related to Climate Change to be held in Lima, Peru from the first week of December,
according to ICIMOD.
The Conference
is being participated by more than 250 policy makers, researchers, experts,
politicians, representatives of various organizations and media persons from 25
