Full guarantee of human rights in Constitution: PM Koirala

Kathmandu, Dec 10: Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has said the new constitution will fully guarantee the protection and promotion of human rights.

At a programme organized by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on the occasion of the 66th International Human Rights Day on Wednesday, PM Koirala said the constitution being promulgated on January 22 will be human rights-friendly.
"We have been fighting for human rights for long. The achievement of democratic republic Nepal is the result of the struggle," he said, adding that the new constitution would incorporate the aspirations of the people from all identities, languages, cultures and religions.

Dialogue, consensus and cooperation among the political parties would be continued for solving any problem, he added.

According to him, time has come again for the unity among the political parties to promulgate the constitution on time.

On the occasion, NHRC Chairman Anup Raj Sharma said implementation of commitments the government has made on human rights was not satisfactory.

Chairperson of the National Women's Commission, Sheikh Chandtara said the gender-based discrimination was prevailing in the country. She drew the government's attention that the condition of Nepali people in the foreign employment was very appalling.

Similarly, Chairman of the National Dalit Commission, Man Bahadur Nepali, demanded the government and the NHRC to work actively for the protection of everyone's human rights.

Acting UN Resident Coordinator, Ziad Sheikh, said Nepal, at present, was in need of a constitution that would protect the rights all Nepali citizens.

Chairperson of NGO Federation, Sharmila Karki, said the recommendations the NHRC has made to the government should be implemented.
