Kathmandu, Dec 10: Prime
Minister Sushil Koirala has said the new constitution will fully guarantee the
protection and promotion of human rights.
At a programme organized by
the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on the occasion of the 66th
International Human Rights Day on Wednesday, PM Koirala said the constitution
being promulgated on January 22 will be human rights-friendly.
"We have been fighting
for human rights for long. The achievement of democratic republic Nepal is the
result of the struggle," he said, adding that the new constitution would
incorporate the aspirations of the people from all identities, languages,
cultures and religions.
Dialogue, consensus and cooperation
among the political parties would be continued for solving any problem, he
added.
According to him, time has
come again for the unity among the political parties to promulgate the
constitution on time.
On the occasion, NHRC
Chairman Anup Raj Sharma said implementation of commitments the government has
made on human rights was not satisfactory.
Chairperson of the National
Women's Commission, Sheikh Chandtara said the gender-based discrimination was
prevailing in the country. She drew the government's attention that the
condition of Nepali people in the foreign employment was very appalling.
Similarly, Chairman of the
National Dalit Commission, Man Bahadur Nepali, demanded the government and the
NHRC to work actively for the protection of everyone's human rights.
Acting UN Resident
Coordinator, Ziad Sheikh, said Nepal, at present, was in need of a constitution
that would protect the rights all Nepali citizens.
Chairperson of NGO
Federation, Sharmila Karki, said the recommendations the NHRC has made to the
government should be implemented.
