Kathmandu, Nov
11: A visiting Indian delegation headed by Minister for Road Transport and
Highways Nitin Gadkari today pledged support in possible development of
waterways in Nepal.
The visiting
Indian Minister made the proposal for use of alternate water route during a
meeting with Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Bhimalendra
Nidhi in the capital city.
"In the
meeting, Gadkari proposed that India was ready to share its experience with the
waterways and provide necessary support," Minister Nidhi said.
The Indian
side shared that the use of waterways was cheaper by half in compared to road
and railways.
Minister Nidhi
said the proposal for use of waterways within Nepal and between Nepal and India
was unique and exciting.
He said that
during the meeting he had drawn the attention towards the delay over the
expansion of the first and second phase of postal road in operation in Nepal's
Terai region under the support of the Indian government.
In response
the Indian Minister assured of taking necessary steps towards advancing the
expansion of the road network after returning to India.
The Indian
Minister also gave an instant directive to the Indian Road Department Director
accompanying him to take a decision regarding the matter at the earliest.
Minister Nidhi
also appealed to the Indian delegation for support in construction of East-West
railway and a bridge over the Mahakali river. RSS
