Biratnagar,
Nov 17: Paddy production in the eastern region is expected to increase by 17
per cent this year in compared to the previous year.
Though
abundant rainfall was not experienced during the time of paddy plantation late
rainfall ensured that the paddy crop was
free of pests and other disease, thereby leading to the rise in production.
Apart
from the five districts in the Tarai, paddy production has also increased in
the hilly and mountainous districts of the region, said Officiating Chief of
the Eastern Regional Agriculture Directorate, Biratnagar Madan Kumar Shrestha.
Last
year, the eastern region had produced 1149,000 metric ton of paddy and is
expected to rise by at least 17 per cent to reach 1397,760 metric ton this
year, according to the Directorate.
The
tarai districts Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Saptari are likely to record a rise
in paddy production by at least 160,000 to 300,000 metric tons while the
increment will be between 17 to 37 thousand metric tons in the mid-hilly
districts of Ilam, Paanchthar, Dhankuta, Terhathum, Bhojpur, Udayapur, Khotang
and Okhaldhunga districts.
Likewise,
the upper hilly districts of Solukhumbu, Taplejung and Sankhuwasabha districts
