Traditional essence waning in Nepali modern songs

Kathmandu, Nov 13: Individuals in the music sector have been worried over gradual decline of traditional essence from the present-day Nepali songs and music.

Speakers at a programme on 'change and influence in modern song writing' held by Nepal Music and Drama Academy on Thursday, said that degeneracy has taken hold in name of modernism and called for injection of renewed traditional values in the Nepali songs and music.

Rastrakavi Madhav Prasad Ghimire said that the songs without traditional spirit can have influence over a short period but would hold no meaning in the long run. He stressed for preserving traditional values in the music sector.

However, lyricist Dr Krishnahari Baral said the change taking place over not only songs but also rhythm and music should be viewed positively while stressing the need for alertness towards possible spread of decadence.

Lyricist and film director Yadav Kharel said the change sought by the new generation was not unusual.

Furthermore, lyricist Rajendra Thapa said the change taking place over Nepali songs and music was in line with contemporary time, and added it was in accordance to the choice and desire of the young generation.

The participants also underlined the necessity for controlling profanity in Nepali music which has been increasing in the name of modernization. RSS
